Lenore chose to approach via the service entrance today. Badge already in hand, she was ready to push her way in. "Take to the manager. I want to hear all about this most recent incident."

Will any of the other clones get any funny ideas?

Leao D'ouro, Golen Lion, was one of the many fancy restaurants catering to the local high-society residents of Laguna Velasco and various others who have been resting comfortably on their sizeable retirement fund. The Portuguese restaurant featured an elaborate entryway dressed with ceramic tiles of various patterns, complete with a red carpet.

The service entrance was less fanciful, admittedly. The restaurant was only in its preparation stages at this point, managing its inventory with the freshest fish from the local fishery brought in. There were a few Cordova clones lingering about, dressed in their waiter's uniforms and it was admittedly far more fanciful than what most of the population of New Angeles wore on a daily basis.



The staff would easily directly Lenore to the manager, who was a stern-looking woman who was found in a low-cut dress.



"Yes? I thought I had told everything to Jinteki warranty services already," she said with a bit of annoyance as she poured herself a glass of wine.

"Yeah, well, sometimes things get lost in translation. That and I wanted to observe how the other Cordova clones interact with you and go about their tasks."

Lenore tucked her hands into her pockets and did just that. She needed to have them some semblance of fear to discourage any future fleeing attempts. "Was this Felix one the oldest of the bunch?"

The woman seemed to cautiously look at her, on the fence between helping her out or waving her away. It was too early to be dealing with headaches, especially when the first customer hadn't even stepped foot in yet.

After a moment, she relented her stance and nodded at the question. "Yes, probably one of the oldest. I think we switched to having the waitstaff with Cordova clones just a few years ago, before I started working here. The customers seem to like them and we haven't had many problems to report, other than maybe the occasional illness or physical weakness."

She finished with pouring herself a glass of wine and offered it to Lenore. It is said that in some ancient Portuguese customs, breakfast consisted of merely wine and bread. They had one of those in front of them for partial marks. "I'm Estele."

"I assume working conditions aren't too harsh on them," Lenore said idly. "Same with their living conditions. Maybe one of those 'activists' has been meeting with him during his shifts. Do you have any logs of who he's interacted with, perhaps?"

Take the drink.

She took the glass, glanced at it, and took a polite sip. "Lenore. Too bad we didn't meet on better circumstances, hm?"

"Sure, we have a few demanding customers from time to time but I think clones are far more consistent when it comes to serving and working longer hours. All of them work from opening to closing, with the occasional breaks. We have them all stay at Rabotgorod, which Jinteki manages for us as part of the package."

She poured another glass for herself and nodded at the request, looking at her wrist PAD to bring up the list of customers. "It's kind of hard to believe that any of our customers here would be an activist. We only have the best clients here and we cater to an older crowd, so nobody is looking out to ruin their reputation."

"Yes, a bit too bad about that," she said simply at the matter. Her stoic expression didn't seem to give away whether or not she felt genuine about her words.

"I'd hope they were properly bred for it, though I'm not the one responsible for that," Lenore said with a slight smile. "But yes, their living conditions are standard then."

She glanced over at the PAD and back at the other woman. "You'd be surprised. Some of the clone technicians themselves are, shall we say, willing to ruin their reputations. Same with bioroids." She shrugged. "You won't see that in retrieval though."

Is she genuine? Ah, well, who really cares anyways?

"They are supposed to be the best, from what I've been told. I don't have any complaints about them, other than all of them looking the same. It kind of makes it hard to tell them apart, especially when they remember certain details for certain customers. Managing their zones is a bit irksome but thankfully there's the AI restaurant organization system for that." Her position was perhaps admittedly a bit extraneous with everything in place at the restaurant.

She took a sip of wine as she looked at the list and before closing the window. "Hm, I'm not too sure about giving this list over...what do you plan to do with it? You know, we have some very exclusive customers here. I think we might lose some of them if they've found out that Felix is no longer on staff. Well, I'm sure another Cordova could do just as well but it's just the sentiments of the elderly, you know."

"Oh I fully expect to return Felix to you as soon as he's done with the technicians. They'll have to do some procedures, of course, but I wouldn't be here if the goal was to merely replace him."

She looked back to the list. "That being said, it would be good to know if any of these clients took a particular liking to him."

"That's right. He was pretty expensive, they all are," she reminded herself before another sip of wine. While it wasn't her business personally, she had to take some interest in it as one of the few human employees here. "I remember that we do have the Platinum Plus warranty package here. I was told if you don't find him in the next few days, we could just get a new one?"

She paused for a moment, looking at her up and down, now wondering how that will reflect on her job. "You do have to do your part for Jinteki. It's going to be a pain in the next few days being down one clone. The owners say I might even have to do my part to help out."

"What do you intend to do with this list?" She would ask again on a reluctant note.

"I do my job correctly and you won't have to worry about any replacements," Lenore said, her fingers twitching in anticipation.

Someone so accustomed to luxury would only respect strength. She's soft, assuredly.

Perhaps that wasn't the best thought. After all, she matched Lenore in prickliness.

Still, Lenore didn't think of it as she said, "I don't think you need to worry about that. If anyone in your list is stealing your property, then you very well wouldn't want them to continue patronizing your restaurant, now would you?"

"I see..." she murmured before taking a small gulp of wine. There was a moment she seemed a bit more preoccupied with fixing her dress than what Lenore said or the bit behind it. Perhaps this was a bit too showy for the morning crowd but certainly, she wasn't going to collect the tips from the clones on their service alone.

"I don't think you need the list at all. Our patrons are too well-off to be stealing Felix clones when they could easily afford a few at home. Don't you think that maybe he just ran, just because? I don't know what's that thing you do in Jinteki, the hypnotism...conditioning? There just might be an error there. Sometimes things are just defective out of the factory, aren't they?" She offered in return before reaching to the purse that sat on the counter and pulled out a silver case.

"Yes, I suppose they may have the wealth to do more direct means of acquiring clones." As in straight up purchasing them. "But okay, since you're mentioning his conditioning, do you think he'd been acting strangely for long?"

Estele looked around the counter she was standing by and found the ivory-coloured ashtray she was looking for, pulling it over to her side before she opened her silver case. There were a few black clove cigarettes found inside with a flame lighter. She took one out and gave a glance behind her to see the small collection of Cordova clones going about their prep with doing placements and setting up tables before the lunchtime opening to come soon.

"...They kind of all look the same, I'm afraid. But it's happened a few times that make it reportable, inputting people's orders wrong and there was a noticeable dip in performance. I think there might have been even more than one complaint about it. People like to take it out on the clones, because they're never going to talk back...but I think this was a legitimate complaint." She took one of the cloves into her lips and lit it with an extraneous flame lighter for style.
