As part of the Mayor's expansion of the Heinlein and the revitalization of the Docklands subdistrict, Delgado had promised New Angeles would see an influx of new sports teams, including a new American football team. Other sports include highly popular video game leagues to more physical competition in sports such as acrobatic disc tag and extreme roller derby. New Angeles already has two American Football teams, the New Angeles Swordfish and the New Angeles Asteroids, which only leaves room for only one new American Football team. Most of these new sports teams will be based out of Heinlein, where they will be calling the lunar district home and do most of their training under their specialized conditions or rules. Collectively, sports tend to be an easy draw for sponsorships, and they are quite popular with locals both on Earth and Luna. Major league American Football is easily the most lucrative of these sports, its fanatical fanbase has provided large revenues to both the city and its sponsors.
This event will consist of two parts. First, each participating committee member must make a proposal for their new team in a sport of their choice, including mascot design and where its players are recruited from. Later, the committee member will take the role of coach and also find potential sponsors for their team.
If the committed member wishes to create an American Football team or, for whatever reason, induct their team into the competition, there will be another Side Event on Day 7 ([Day 7 - Early Afternoon] Side Event: Lunar American Football). The event will be held on Heinlein, which will be an eliminator-style tournament to see which prospective team will become New Angeles's newest American football team.
Time Slot: Please note, this event does not take up a timeslot during the day. Each committee member will be able to break down the work required throughout their schedules.
For every two Advantages, the committee member's next roll gains 1 Boost die. For every two Threats, the committee member's next roll gains 1 Setback die. Every Triumph rolled counts as an additional Sports Point and every Despair rolled subtracts a Sports Point.
Name and Mascot
First, the committee member must come up with a name for their team. Ideally, the mayor wants a team name that will differentiate itself from the other two established teams while tying itself with something that New Angelinos can be proud of. This is entirely up to the interpretation of the committee member.
Any sports team must also come with a mascot. Mascots can be more popular than the team itself, popular with children, and there are many merchandising opportunities found with them. The committee member may either roll Charm (Presence) to come up with an appealing mascot that people will adore or roll Coordination (Agility) to come up with a performance routine for the mascot. All rolls are made at Average Difficulty (◆◆).
On success, one Sport Point is scored and the coach receives 1 Funding Point for later use.
Recruitment
Even without the rush of many committee members trying to put together a sports team, sports recruitment has always proven difficult in New Angeles. New Angeles is a massive city with no shortage of people at the very least. Levy University has a full-fledged sports program and would seem like a natural place to look but they've never done well in competition against other schools. The streets are also full of sports enthusiasts but not many are willing to comb through the average resident to find the next star player or MVP. Some recruiters may consider looking at corporate employees, the NAPD, or even digging into the penal system.
The committee member may make either a Society (Intelligence) or Streetwise (Cunning) skill check at Average Difficulty (◆◆) to recruit players for their team.
Alternatively, as an audacious option, the committee member may consider building or growing their own players to make an android team. This android team will be in the sponsored ownership with either Haas-Bioroid or Jinteki, depending on the type of Android. This is done with a skill check using either Mechanics (Intelligence) or Science (Intelligence) at Average Difficulty with two Setback dice (◆◆■■).
On success, one Sport Point is scored and the team also gains one Characteristic Point for later use.
Training
After the formation of the sports team, the committee member must take on the role of coach to guide and train their team. The team must work on the basics and definite their roles internally. In addition to working as a cohesive unit, the team must also train to play in low gravity or familiarize themselves with the special format rules on Luna. While there are ample means to simulate the low gravity of Luna, there is no substitute for actually playing and living among Loonies on the moon.
The coach may either make a Athletics (Brawn) or Leadership (Presence), as appropriate, at Average Difficulty with two Setback dice (◆◆■■). Any coach with the archetype Loonie or Luna-based faction affiliation may remove the Setback dice in this roll as they are able to provide their first-hand experience.
On success, one Sport Point is scored and the team also gains one Skill Point for later use.
Commercial Sponsorship
Each team benefits from sponsorship from either a Megacorporation or other organization, which typically piggybacks on the team's popularity for advertisement space on the Network. Organizations take notice of teams that perform well, typically finding a star player to become a public face and sell their message. Many organizations are currently very eager to sponsor these budding new teams in hopes that they will become successful in the future to pay dividends. At the very least, this will afford them a prime commercial spot on the local lunar network.
The coach may either make a The Net (Intelligence) or Negotiation (Presence) at Average Difficulty (◆◆) to find a sponsor to best suit their needs. While there are plentiful smaller partners willing to jump at this opportunity, the truly lucrative deals will require some courting on the coach's behalf. The coaches working for one of the Big Four Megacorpoation gain one Boost Die (+■) in their efforts.
On success, one Sport Point is scored and the team also gains one reroll per game for later use, specifically in [Day 7 - Early Afternoon] Side Event: Lunar American Football. A worthy sponsor will provide a commercial break or half-time show is earned to allow their respective team to collect themselves.
Results
At the conclusion of the event, if the committee is able to gather at least 24 Sports Points, they gain One Agenda Point!
Every Sports point after 24 means that the committee is able to attract an additional sponsor to their respective teams, allowing for more flashy uniforms and better equipment. Each respective team owner reaps further benefits from this and gains 50 Credits for additional Sports Points gained in this way.
