D2 LA - Asking for clearance (City Hall)

With the address an time of the accident commited to memory, Lina Unit #19 made their way to the sector dealing with security and relations with the NAPD - this time wearing the formal NAG uniform. They imagined the city's CCTV system would likely have caught something - especially so in Rutherford. But under whose care the recordings would be and how to get to it was not so obvious. It was a matter of dealing with the bureaucracy, of course - and that they knew they would eventually get through. But it was also a matter of getting those responsible to understand the relevance of their request.

Well... 'greasing the wheels' was what humans called it, right? Finding the right people to talk to, saying the right things, filling out a number of forms. It would work out eventually.

Or at least they hoped so.

It wasn't unusual to be meeting with an efficiency-based bioroid, Ash models were in abundance in a few offices, but the recent Humanity Labor ad did make him wonder why bioroids could be working management and inspection instead of the other way around. Anyway, that was perhaps something to think about after this meeting.

The lieutenant was in uniform when Lina arrived, meeting her at the lobby at first. The lobby was busy but the abundance of granite stonework and plants created little alcoves for people to talk, if there were comfortable doing so with the likelihood of being eavesdropped.

"Angelina, right?" Trevor would say with a question, not knowing if he even had the right unit. He did extend his hand to shake. "I'm Lieutenant Trevor Williams, you had some questions regarding the Richard Perez accident?"

The bioroid's hand met the man's with a firm touch, but not overly so. "I'm an Angelina model, yes, Lieutenant Trevor. Thank you for receiving me." The voice was deep, not quite feminine, but still pleasant, despite the usual unnaturalness of Mk3 models.

"I did want to raise some issues regarding the accident. A friend of the victim raised these issues, in fact, and I do believe they warrant looking into. It seems some believe the circumstances of the accident may be... dubious might be a way to put it."

The silver glow of #19's eyes pierce the man's own eyes as she speaks the next words.

"If relevant footage providing a good view of the accident and its circumstances could be found, I'm certain many of these doubts could be assuaged, right? Or, if there is something to be worried about... it could be a starting point.

The bioroid's eyes as they say "something to be worried about" seem to indicate a hope that there is not something else there... but also some doubts of their own.

The bioroid's hand met the man's with a firm touch, but not overly so. "I'm an Angelina model, yes, Lieutenant Trevor. Thank you for receiving me." The voice was deep, not quite feminine, but still pleasant, despite the usual unnaturalness of Mk3 models.

"I did want to raise some issues regarding the accident. A friend of the victim raised these issues, in fact, and I do believe they warrant looking into. It seems some believe the circumstances of the accident may be... dubious might be a way to put it."

"Another friend of the victim?" He asked curiously with a raised brow as he tried to restrain himself from sighing. There were some headaches that he thought were gone by now that threatened to resurface. At least this 'friend' didn't seem like a lawyer.

"It seems pretty dubious, I admit, most of these surprise executive deaths typically are. However, before the scraps were even picked off the streets and the death certificate was signed, we were immediately swarmed by calls of family, lawyers..." He paused for a moment to mention with some obvious doubt. "and 'friends'. The captain asked this one to be closed as soon as possible so that they could process the insurance claim as soon as possible. I take it the family wanted to cash out as soon as possible before the Weyland Consortium can pull the benefits from underneath Perez's corpse."

"Anyway, you can take a look at the footage yourself." He said as he pull out his PAD from his pocket. With a few flicks of his fingers, there was a holographic projection of Trevor sending the file to Lina.

"Thank you very much, Lt. Williams, just got it", they said with a professional tone as the 'file received' message flashed on their internal display.

"If I can take one more moment to ask you about something you said. You mentioned they wanting to process the insurance claim asap. It didn't seem certain that the man hadn't survived the accident from what I had heard before. Is that confirmed? And... is it confirmed that it was the family that cashed out the insurance money?"

Once the file was received, Lina got their hands on the footage of the crash. If they choose to play it, it would be a collection of street camera footage where it should show a fancy red sports hooper that barreling down the 'street'. It seemed to be on one fo the quieter parts of the district, likely just off the main road. The hooper was ablaze and completely on fire on the inside, as well as out. The vehicle would swerve helpless, trying to remain afloat in the skies, perhaps some automated safety guidance system before descending down to the ground below. There was a good share of the footage of the vehicle itself going down and being on fire but no footage as to what caused the accident in the first place. There was a missing time frame from when he entered Park Lane and would only emerge back into view of a street camera once more being ablaze.

"I'm very sure they wanted to keep that off the news. His private medical insurance scraped him off the ground and had to do their due diligence to resuscitate him, as part of his coverage package." He gave a dismissive shake of his head at that silly thought, wanting to snicker. "But yeah, I'd say that is confirmed, probably buried 10 minutes into the news on day 2. I don't know the formal proceedings but the family lawyer worked fast and put enough pressure on the captain to close the case immediately. I'm sure if they risked dragging this out into a proper investigation, the insurance money would have evaporated into the either."

#19 would have taken a first look at the file, although they would certainly put it down in her schedule to have another, more careful look at the footage. The missing time frame had them raising an eyebrow though.

The next words from the Lieutenant were met with a nod, although an unsure one. "I see. That is very unfortunate. His friend apparently hadn't known even that much... I'll be sure to relay the bad news. The formal proceedings for the insurance money, though..." The bioroid shook their head slightly. It was from this was the sort of thing that the "collateral morals" some joked around them had arised.

"Rushed proceedings, pressure to close the case. It all sounds a bit... "

Their eyes suddenly dimmed as a rush of possible word suggestions showed up on their internal display, none of them quite fitting. Instead of completing the sentence, the bioroid started a new one, the silver eyes darkening even more, then brightening up again.

"Hm... Lieutenant, there seems to be a missing interval in the footage. I assume this has been looked into already?"

Park Lane. A defective CCTV camera? But quite a coincidence that would be....

Trevor nodded a few times, although his suspicions did kick in as a police office. "You'd think that a friend would be all of this on day one, try to snag a piece of the pie or maybe claim to be some lost relative in the will. I'd probably be careful with who you're dealing with this on the matter. Maybe a tabloid reporter?"

"Yeah," he nodded regretfully when that was pointed. "Probably all the more reason the captain wanted this close down as soon as possible. It was listed the footage as something of system maintenance at the time if you take a look at the report with the footage I sent you."

The Lina's mind (mind?) returned to the conversation the day before. It was very unlikely... a Tabloid reporter wouldn't be that moved by what happened. Would they?

They felt a slight shock as some doubt crossed their circuits... but only for a moment. No... they were certain. They were a friend. They had to be.

Nonetheless, they simply nodded to Trevor again as he said that. The next words, however, were met with a cautious frown. "System maintenance... ok. I'll double check that report. An awful coincidence, isn't it? Right at the area when..."

They stopped. It warranted further analysis... wouldn't do to jump to conclusions now. The next nod was paired with a serious, but polite smile. "Well.. Thank you for humouring this request, Lt. Williams. Hopefully there's nothing untoward behind this after all."

"Is something the matter, Lieutenant? If there is, I would be glad to help."

"Well, that's the thing..." He continued to frown. "It wasn't exactly a system maintenance but rather the system had encountered an intrusion when it was hacked at the time. Of course, the captain didn't want to exactly look bad and kind of was more than happy to cooperate with the lawyers as soon as possible to sweep it under the rug, to so speak. Of course, this you didn't hear from me."

He narrowed his eyes on the bioroid for a moment, perhaps wondering about his life decision when it came to sharing something like that with an Angelina.

The Angelina in question answered the frown and the narrowing of the Lieutenant's eyes with a slight darkening of their own eyes, but also with their serious expression turning into a smile.

"Of course, Lieutenant. And thank you for your trust in having this heard." A nod. "Is there anyone you would like this to have been heard from?"

It sounded almost like a protocol thing - a 'who said what where when' record sort of thing. But in a way, if it were a human saying it... it could be meant to build trust?

The Angelina in question answered the frown and the narrowing of the Lieutenant's eyes with a slight darkening of their own eyes, but also with their serious expression turning into a smile.

Some more whirring was going on in the background. Now... how could they find out what exactly had happened. Maybe they'd have to ask some more questions somewhere. That... or find someone who could find out what happened to that cam. But where?

Personally, I'd like to see some real closure on this close case. However, my hands are tied and I've got other things that have been dumped on me. It's not like I can afford to dwell on everything too long. Anyway, I should be heading back. Take it easy."

With that, Trevor meandered out of the lobby to make his return to the NAPD headquarters.
