[Day 4] Agenda Event: New Angeles's Next Sports Team (Blue Sun Stadium)

As part of the Mayor's expansion of the Heinlein and the revitalization of the Docklands subdistrict, Delgado had promised New Angeles would see an influx of new sports teams, including a new American football team. Other sports include highly popular video game leagues to more physical competition in sports such as acrobatic disc tag and extreme roller derby. New Angeles already has two American Football teams, the New Angeles Swordfish and the New Angeles Asteroids, which only leaves room for only one new American Football team. Most of these new sports teams will be based out of Heinlein, where they will be calling the lunar district home and do most of their training under their specialized conditions or rules. Collectively, sports tend to be an easy draw for sponsorships, and they are quite popular with locals both on Earth and Luna. Major league American Football is easily the most lucrative of these sports, its fanatical fanbase has provided large revenues to both the city and its sponsors.

This event will consist of two parts. First, each participating committee member must make a proposal for their new team in a sport of their choice, including mascot design and where its players are recruited from. Later, the committee member will take the role of coach and also find potential sponsors for their team.

If the committed member wishes to create an American Football team or, for whatever reason, induct their team into the competition, the second part will be another Side Event on Day 7 ([Day 7 - Early Afternoon] Side Event: Lunar American Football). The event will be held on Heinlein, which will be an eliminator-style tournament to see which prospective team will become New Angeles's newest American football team.

Time Slot: Please note, this event does not take up a timeslot during the day. Each committee member will be able to break down the work required throughout their schedules.

For every two Advantages, the committee member's next roll gains 1 Boost die. For every two Threats, the committee member's next roll gains 1 Setback die. Every Triumph rolled counts as an additional Sports Point and every Despair rolled subtracts a Sports Point.

Name and Mascot
First, the committee member must come up with a name for their team. Ideally, the mayor wants a team name that will differentiate itself from the other two established teams while tying itself with something that New Angelinos can be proud of. This is entirely up to the interpretation of the committee member.

Any sports team must also come with a mascot. Mascots can be more popular than the team itself, popular with children, and there are many merchandising opportunities found with them. The committee member may either roll Charm (Presence) to come up with an appealing mascot that people will adore or roll Coordination (Agility) to come up with a performance routine for the mascot. All rolls are made at Average Difficulty (◆◆).

On success, one Sport Point is scored and the coach receives 1 Funding Point for later use.

Recruitment
Even without the rush of many committee members trying to put together a sports team, sports recruitment has always proven difficult in New Angeles. New Angeles is a massive city with no shortage of people at the very least. Levy University has a full-fledged sports program and would seem like a natural place to look but they've never done well in competition against other schools. The streets are also full of sports enthusiasts but not many are willing to comb through the average resident to find the next star player or MVP. Some recruiters may consider looking at corporate employees, the NAPD, or even digging into the penal system.

The committee member may make either a Society (Intelligence) or Streetwise (Cunning) skill check at Average Difficulty (◆◆) to recruit players for their team.

Alternatively, as an audacious option, the committee member may consider building or growing their own players to make an android team. This android team will be in the sponsored ownership with either Haas-Bioroid or Jinteki, depending on the type of Android. This is done with a skill check using either Mechanics (Intelligence) or Science (Intelligence) at Average Difficulty with two Setback dice (◆◆■■).

On success, one Sport Point is scored and the team also gains one Characteristic Point for later use.

Training
After the formation of the sports team, the committee member must take on the role of coach to guide and train their team. The team must work on the basics and definite their roles internally. In addition to working as a cohesive unit, the team must also train to play in low gravity or familiarize themselves with the special format rules on Luna. While there are ample means to simulate the low gravity of Luna, there is no substitute for actually playing and living among Loonies on the moon.

The coach may either make a Athletics (Brawn) or Leadership (Presence), as appropriate, at Average Difficulty with two Setback dice (◆◆■■). Any coach with the archetype Loonie or Luna-based faction affiliation may remove the Setback dice in this roll as they are able to provide their first-hand experience.

On success, one Sport Point is scored and the team also gains one Skill Point for later use.

Commercial Sponsorship
Each team benefits from sponsorship from either a Megacorporation or other organization, which typically piggybacks on the team's popularity for advertisement space on the Network. Organizations take notice of teams that perform well, typically finding a star player to become a public face and sell their message. Many organizations are currently very eager to sponsor these budding new teams in hopes that they will become successful in the future to pay dividends. At the very least, this will afford them a prime commercial spot on the local lunar network.

The coach may either make a The Net (Intelligence) or Negotiation (Presence) at Average Difficulty (◆◆) to find a sponsor to best suit their needs. While there are plentiful smaller partners willing to jump at this opportunity, the truly lucrative deals will require some courting on the coach's behalf. The coaches working for one of the Big Four Megacorpoation gain one Boost Die (+) in their efforts.

On success, one Sport Point is scored and the team also gains one reroll per game for later use, specifically in [Day 7 - Early Afternoon] Side Event: Lunar American Football. A worthy sponsor will provide a commercial break or half-time show is earned to allow their respective team to collect themselves.

Results
At the conclusion of the event, if the committee is able to gather at least 20 Sports Points, they gain One Agenda Point!

Every Sports point after 20 means that the committee is able to attract an additional sponsor to their respective teams, allowing for more flashy uniforms and better equipment. Each respective team owner reaps further benefits from this and gains 50 Credits for additional Sports Points gained in this way.

Nadia spent much of the time she was given earlier in the morning trying her best to come up with some ideas. Collecting from her varied experience of brief interactions with others, like Debra Slee and Leo Knight, as well as the extensive time with Elizabeth she tried her best to put forward a mascot that was fitting, charming. When she presented her best efforts there was a chuckle in the back of the room but no-one seemed to be going for it.

Of course, later on she was able to rely on other resources. Shifting out of her schedule in the afternoon while Elizabeth was on call Nadia put in the time to do a bit of research. After a while she'd come up with the idea of implementing a clone team in partnership with Jinteki. This being an idea that when presented got very mixed reactions. Some finding it to be a truly awful idea, which was surely not connected to their Haas-Bioroid affiliations while others thought it was phenomenal, which was surely not connected to their Jinteki affiliations. Ultimately, by the end of the afternoon, Nadia's support for clone-players was ultimately worthy enough for consideration.

Ultimately, later in the evening. When it came to dressing up in some extra sports wear (which consisted only of a ballcap over her usual suit-affair) Nadia was ready to attempt her best at coaching the team and getting them more acclimated toward the ideas of what they might be facing. However, as it just so happens, folk don't typically respond well to a suit whom doesn't have as much spirit as other coaches typically do. Didn't quite matter if she was a clone or not because all the team saw before them was a suit.

Searching through the net just as the night was settling. Nadia sat in the cooled room in the presence of Elizabeth as the two women worked. Outside the city skyline was visible but both were focused on other things, with Nadia's focus being far more apparent due to the digital glow of her iris' as she searched through the net to find themselves just the right sponsor for the job. One that was exceptionally perfect for the sports team, and though she contained some of her excitement, Nadia happily and quickly informed Elizabeth of when she'd finished sealing the deal.

Designing, recruiting, training and finding sponsors for a sports team. Now that's one thing #19 really felt they weren't designed for.

And as they went on to try to think of a Mascot and Name for the team, it clearly showed.

Their starting idea was... not a terrible one, on the face of it. Team mascots were often animals. Ok, that was one thing. And they wanted the team to represent the City, its area, and its people. All of its people.

(Our people, they thought. But were they people if they weren't recognised as such? They shook the thought out of their head).

Ok, that was a start. How to go about that?

An animal that was particular to the natural areas of the city, or its surroundings. That should work! They went online to search for 'Animals endemic to New Angeles... and found one. A Shrew. Cryptotis equatoris, or the Ecuadorian small-eared shrew, found from a bit east of the Guayaquil district, through part of eastern New Angeles, up to Quito. That should work!

Not really thinking much about how to make the mascot particularly charismatic, they just took a photo of the (incredibly rare, apparently) shrew and called it the team's mascot.

Image

The name was "obvious" - The Angelino Shrews. That should be charismatic enough, right?

RIGHT??

(As they would learn later, it wasn't as simple as that...)

Recruiting players was not as hard as they thought it would be. They took some time scouting around Laguna Velasco, and between the University and some of the places frequented by students around it, they actually found some people who were apparently recognised as talented in sports.

Ok, different sports. They decided to go for a "sports team"... in general. Most of the players they found were talented in football - 'foot' football, or 'windbag kicking' as some called it - the sport that was still the most popular in many areas of South America. It seemed appropriate... although it might attract less attention in New Angeles proper, given the great influence of American sports in the city.

So what #19 went for was a "Football in general" team. Whatever that might mean...

...of course, training the group of players for that proved to be very hard. Even more so considering they had to try to train for a Low-gravity environment. The bioroid tried to search for some ideas on how to do that here and there on the web, with.... very limited results.

Despite the clear shortcomings of their strategy, finding Sponsors for the "Angelino Shrews" was surprisingly NOT as hard as they had thought it would be. It might not be enough to offset the difficulties stemming from the bioroid's... unorthodox approach, but it provided the players of the newly established team with some encouragement, at least...

Di took up the opportunity for her OWN SPORTS TEAM (THAT OF THE MOON) with GUSTO!

"The New Angeles Jacks will slay the opposition! And no cowplaying around." She winked at the gathered folk. Some looked sceptical.okay, most looked sceptical, but hey, the other half was looking at her rather than the board, so she sashayed just the right way for a vote.

She went around Levy University, advertising for team positions for the third AND BESTEST football team. Quite a few university student athletes were enthusiastic - desperate - enough to get a position which might help their student debt down payments. Yay!

Di, being a goddess of the Moon, started training the team, with appropriate stand-ins for lunar gravity. Who knew tackling underwater was so much fun! To watch. Not to do.

Finally, she approached her family to request some funds from Weyland. "Think of the advertising opportunity! And all the hot young people wearing jerseys with Weyland logos on them!"

So persuasive.

Team name wasn't that easy to come up with. New Angeles Murdercats was rejected in seconds. It had to be feline though and as jaguars were the continents big cat he eventually settled for that. New Angeles Jaguars. He didn't care that an American team already used the name. They didn't pronounce it right anyways.

Ok Ven wasn't much of a ball sports fan . . . well except for looking at male sportsmen in tight clothing . . . . . . . . . . Sooooo, after a brief daydreaming distraction. Ok maybe not that brief, Ven had very little time to think of a mascot. He defaulted to type. Unfortunately his default was naked catboi . . . not appropriate. Not accepted. Hissssssssssss!

Now talking to people and getting them to join the team . . . that was more to his liking! Dashing around the city, he sweet talked, smiled cutely, persuaded and basically actually recruited a fairly decent set of sportspersons! Maybe this wasn't such a wash out after all.

Next was the training . . . Ven was absolutely clueless on how this happened. "OK . . . Totally score more points than the other team, yes?!??!?! GO TEAM. GO JAGUARS!!!!!" The players were expecting a good deal more than to be honest.

Sponsorship was the final step and as a Jinteki employee he traipsed along to the accounting division and started applying for corporate sponsorship for the team. Unfortunately the accountant that dealt with his application was an Ex . . . and they hadn't broken up on anything approaching friendly terms. More like screaming and screeching terms. The sponsorship application came back with a big red 'DENIED' stamp on the front for insufficient profit forecasting and signing 2 millimetres outside the box.

Ven decided he should stick to skateboarding.

Roger was a machine built for precision movements. His enganced reflexes showcased as he demonstrated...

The Dance of Joy

While when performed by the Avalanche Mascot, Andy Andes, it was endearing. When performed by the juggernaut that was Roger, it gave off a sense of unease.

Which didn't help when he tried to recruit players, get a higher draft pick. In order to fill out their team, the Avalanche would have to rely on the waiver wire.

Yet Roger could put the team through their paces. The training program he set up would ensure a tough, physical team.

Unfortunately they were only able to attract small time sponsors.

Everyone likes an Underdog, though...

This was stupid.

Leo sighed as he reviewed his info. A sports team. He watched sports... sometimes. When it happened to be on, and he was already staring at the screen. What did he know about sports teams?

"So... uh... it'll be the New Angeles Wildcats." He had some idea that Wildcats was a good team name. "And for a mascot, I guess, you could have some kind of cat? And it could do a dance, like this?" Leo kinda shuffled around a bit. It was awkward. He felt awkward. His cybereye flickered as he semi-covertly checked the time.

How did you find players for a team? Leo didn't know that. But hey, maybe going to an old-timey sports bar... asking around, Leo actually managed to find enough amateur enthusiasts to put together something of a team. Sorta. It still felt awkward.

And then he had to train with them! It wasn't as though he enjoyed doing it, not really... Leo's expression as they trained was impassive, but he was covertly pleased with how he seemed to adjust quickly to the Lunar gravity. It was a good sign. For later.

Leo had no idea how to gather sponsors. He ran internet searches for... who would sponsor his team? Pet stores? None of them really seemed to have sponsorships. He ended up sending it to his corporate handler, and got back some cat pictures.

That wasn't what he wanted...

Ven Garcia-Estravez: 1 Sports Points and +1 Characteristic Point

Total Committee Score 19/20

Despite the efforts of the committee, it seemed that the hype for another sports team was at a low. New Angelinos found themselves rather unenthused about further saturating the already busy competitive market of sports. There were a few cute ideas however and some eager prospects would mean that some of these teams will still see the day of light in the future.
