[Day 2] Agenda Event: Seminar Talks (Barre Civic Centre)

The annual New Angeles Expo has always been a platform where many enterprising individuals, intellectuals, and corporate gather in one place to present potential directions to further the growth of the city and further their own goals. The expo is famously known for its flashy exhibits where new technology is presented to the masses but the first night of the expo is more subdued, restricted only to those inside the industry than the general public. However, the expo still has a Network presence and there is much interest circulating Alice Delgado's plans of expanding Heinlein. as well as how she intends to do it.

Much of the spotlight has turned toward the members of the committee formed by Delgado's office. The media and the public wish to know more about these individuals, their qualifications, and their aspirations. Thankfully, the expo also provides a platform where many of the industry attendees are invited to share their ideas, opinions and encourage inspiration. Any participant may take part in the widely publicized Seminar Talks so long as they have something to share relating to the growth of New Angeles, even indirectly. The mayor has desires for her committee to present themselves to the public through these seminars and build further credibility to her cause with their participation.

A presentation in a seminar talk consists of an introduction, an idea and, a conclusion. The participant will be responsible for making their presentation as cohesive and appealing as possible.

Time Slot: Please note, this event does not take up a timeslot during the day. Participants can devote a small portion of their day to their presentation or do it remotely through the Network.

For every two Advantages, the presenter's next roll gains 1 Boost die. For every two Threats, the presenter's next roll gains 1 Setback die. A Triumph makes the roll a success, even if failed as a result. A Despair means the presenter makes a blunder in public and the roll is considered a failure, even if the results dictate it passed. Triumph wins ties here.

The Introduction
The participant makes a skill roll of their choice at Average Difficulty (◆◆), as they present the opening of their seminar, presentation, or speech. This is often the hook and ties into their topic.

Idea
The participant makes a skill roll of their choice at Average Difficulty (◆◆), presenting the meat of their seminar. If this is a skill they’ve used already, this is done at Hard Difficulty (◆◆◆) instead of as they run a risk of repeating their points and potentially lose effectiveness.

Conclusion
The participant makes a skill roll of their choice at Average Difficulty with one upgrade (), bringing all their points together. If this skill was used already previously in either above rolls, this is done at Hard Difficulty with one upgrade (◆◆). If this skill was already used twice, this roll is done at Hard Difficulty with two upgrades (⬟⬟).

Each successful roll will grant the participant with one Seminar Point.

Results
If the Committee collectively manages to get 12 or more Seminar Points, the Seminar Talks overall have proven to be memorable, thought-provoking, and aspiring enough to leave a long impression on the attendees. The group earns One Agenda Point.

If the participants managed to succeed in all three rolls during their Seminar Talk, their presentation is effective, cohesive, and entertaining enough to be a proven success at New Angeles Expo and to the general public. This also boosts their credibility as a member of the mayor's committee. They are granted 1 Funding Point. This will become relevant near the end of the game.

Day 2 Agenda Event - Seminar Talks - Part 1: Introduction (Brawn 4, Athletics 2, Average Difficulty): 2eP+2eA+2eD 2 successes, 3 advantage, 1 Triumph
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

There was an area where ideas were being presented in person. The sound of rolling thunder was heard, rapidly approaching the rear wall of the presentation area. Then what could only be described as a bomb going off, and a billowing cloud of debris and pulverized concrete.

"OH YEAH!" Roger chanted out loudly as he emerged from the now demolished wall, raising his fists, clad as he was in a long overcoat and hat, looking as inconspicuous as he could, considering what he was. "Let's talk about what these improvements will mean. The benefit? ART!" He shouted

Day 2 Agenda Event - Seminar Talks - Part 2: The Idea (Agility 4, Coordination 0, +1 from Enhanced Reflexes, +1eB from 2 advantages on last check, Average Difficulty): 1eP+3eA+1eB+2eD 2 successes, 2 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

The titan of metal and cybernetics then whirled off the hat and trenchcoat, revealing... a dancers leotard. No words were spoken, as the great android began emanating some pop music, and dancing in sync with the rhythm. It was an odd display from the large android, and almost interpretive. Which meant that maybe the point was lost somewhere as people paying attention wondered just what the hell was going on.

Day 2 Agenda Event - Seminar Talks - Part 3: The Conclusion (Willpower 3, Coercion 2, +1eS from 2 threat on the previous roll, Average Difficulty, Upgraded once): 2eP+1eA+1eC+1eD+1eS 3 successes, 2 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Then the music stopped, and turned to something far more ominous, and uneasy. The titan of steel then stood tall, glaring at the gathered listening for committee presentations. "So. Support the Mayor's plans. Or else." His demeanor turned more serious, and Roger, Unit 09, gathered his trenchcoat and hat, and ran back through the rubble he had initially caused:

Total: 3 (4?) Seminar Points, 1 setback passed to the next roller?

Each roll passed, Roger-09 has earned 1 Funding Point

The way the NAG Mk3 unit would approach something like this presentation had to start, unsurprisingly, from an analysis of social interests. Hopefully a thorough, precise analysis.

This time, however, the analysis they performed was thoroughly imprecise. Following the same sort of assessment of laws, issues, rights and duties she had used for the day before, #19's calculations once again led them to focus on problems such as deficiencies in housing, job and leisure opportunities and income inequality, which the Mayor's project might help reduce. Of course, the public composed mostly of entrepreneurs and high-up corporate staff kept waiting for that "Government Unit" to get to the point of how the project and its relation to these "unfortunate" ('disgusting and uninteresting', some will have mentioned in the back) issues could become business opportunities.

A point the Unit's analysis never got to, of course.

As the presentation progressed, the Lina Unit, sporting a formal suit for men ("masculine clothing? On a Lina?", some said in the back), although with NAG symbols and other telltale signs clearly marking her position, tried to keep their eyes and ears wide open to catch possible criticism, disapproving looks and other hints so they could adjust the Presentation here and there, possibly even calling out some of those with critical comments.

It turned out there many critical looks and words, from many places and on different points. For some time, #19 wondered if their analysis had been mistaken, if they had somehow used an outdated database, or forgotten to add the earliest adjustments to Laws. Then the words keep appearing in their internal display.

Corporate C-suite. Corporate exec. Corporate baron. Corporate representative. Money laundering scheme? Corporate. Corporate. Corporate

Some more time, their sensors slowly becoming overwhelmed.

No interest in public services. Limited interest in housing projects. Limited interest in providing jobs. Limited interest in the public good

Of course... that should have been obvious. Their assessment of the public audience had been sorely flawed.

The Lina model's synthskin face contorted, some of the plasteel behind it showing for a moment before they put on a mask of tranquility and confidence again. It had been a lot, and it was overwhelming, but the Mk3's improved hearing sensors had served their purpose, and they could react... for at least some effect.

"As I finish this presentation, it should be clear that the Mayor is thinking about the good of all New Angelinos with the Heinlein project - and that is the hope of all representatives of the Government as well."

A short, dramatic silence.

"It also becomes clear that this may not be the presentation you had been looking for. The good of all common people is the focus of the New Angeles Government, as it should be - but it is not the focus for most of the groups you in the audience represent.

Well, I did not focus here on the major business opportunities the Heinlein Project will bring, in Luna, but also in our closest neighbourhoods. I did not, because I expected those to be self-evident. Construction projects, increased population, increased travel, increased opportunities from sports to fashion, and everywhere in-between. The NA Government would expect that those in the business world would need no encouragement to see the many opportunities waiting to be seized.

The government can only expect that those that are hoping for such opportunities to throw their support into the project will see and support its benefits to the city as a whole as well. The NA Government thanks you all and hopes to have you with us in this endeavour."

That change at the end had at least 'some' pull to it, it seemed. #19 left the presentation more or less certain it had more to do with the 'business' part than anything else, though...

... that warranted an adjustment to their 'programmed morals', in case they might have to deal with this public again. They had the feeling that adjustment would immediately collide with their 'developing morals', though...

Athletics wrote:What do the people care about? Looking good. And that comes with physical training.
Lenore walked onto the stage in baggy activewear, perhaps more apt for a hip-hop routine than a pure fitness talk. "Humanity has done many great things in its course, including settling the moon! But when it comes to space travel, it's important that your body is prepared for the natural toll it takes." At least she wasn't sounding like a total meathead. She even added in some nifty obstacle demonstrations and how to vault them.
Melee wrote:The chase is important, yes, but the most effective tool in our arsenal is beating the shit outta someone.
However, the darker aspects of her job didn't really mesh with the crowd. During her performance, she whipped out her baton and began beating on some dummies. At the very least, she'd not enlisted actual androids to be used in the demonstration. "Combat training is one of the most practical ways to increase fitness. You never know when you might need it."
Resilience wrote:Lungs are still operational despite all of those cigarettes.
Still, at the very least, she didn't burn out from the exertion. She maintained poise after putting away her weapon and bowed to the crowd. "I hope for a future where all citizens can live fulfilling lives full of vitality."

Dr. Lux had a great introduction to her subject on the psychological sciences of bioroids. This was a topic that was near and dear to her, and she truly believed that if she just could get more people to understand more, a more compassionate world for the androids could be possible.

However, as she was getting more into the idea of how more equity between androids and humans would improve things overall for all, including revitalizing job opportunities, things were getting a bit tense.

Sensing that things weren't going so well, Dr. Lux managed to wrap up the conclusion without drawing any ire, leaving some words that at least avoided her becoming the target of angry activists.

Ven's presentation to the seminar was all done via the net and his sparkly rainbow haired catboi avatar, sadly still fully clothed as insisted upon by his therapist. At least he could have graphical clothing that would be impossible in real life.

The avatar bounced around the screen as energetically as Ven himself was as it explained the theories behind computerised control and the benefits the Net could bring to the areas of the Moon the project would focus on.

Flashy graphics ensued as he moved on to the threats to the virtual world that might be encountered, before Rainbow Nya vapourised them all with a virtual bazooka and a dance of victory as Ven very vaguely described the countermeasures that could be taken to destroy those threats, without actually exposing any of the real countermeasures he had planned.

"So in the end your virtual future will be more secure with this project and a safer and better world will result, nya!"

He thought it had gone well, but did wonder if he should have left in the "stripper segment".

Diana stood in front of a crowd at the expo, dressed in a smart suit. She took a deep breath. C'mon Di, you got this.

"Greetings one and all, welcome to the future!"

Wow, that was lame.

Luckily, her pitch was much better. "A better Heinlein means a better New Angeles. A better New Angeles means your property value rises. Think of your investments. A richer New Angeles is a richer you!"

She pointed at random individuals, but apparently greed was the right motivator.

What to give a presentation on? The best way to kill a man? How long it took a target to bleed out? Which ammunition types would cause the most sort of tissue damage? No. None of those would be good. He had to know his audience... the answer came to him suddenly.

"The best way," Leo began, "-to sneak out of a work party early, is to make an impression, but not that much of one. You want people to remember that you were there, but not look for you. Join conversations, laugh at a joke, and then move on. Be in as many pictures as you can. Get someone's phone, ask them to take a picture of you with it. That way, they'll definitely remember you were there.

"Then," he went on, "you have to set the stage for your leaving. Let people know, you're just going to another part of the party, but you'll be back. Maybe to the bathroom. Maybe to get some ice from the freezer. Just something to put the idea in their mind that if they don't see you, it's okay."

"And then..." Leo smiled. "You slip out. Make sure it's casual. Walk with someone else if you can; a group is less suspicious than one person by itself. Next thing you know, you'll be out."

Behind the stage at the conference Nadia's silver glow to her iris' stood out from the out of the way darkened space she has claimed. Occasionally her head shifts as she sifts through all the information one last time. Nadia was well versed in the net, pulling information from many of her more general sources of understanding. However, sprinkled throughout and especially earlier on there was some language that would have been well understood by other specialists in the field but less so by the layman, and even Elizabeth herself perhaps. This language did create a small bump early on but was smoothed out over time. As Nadia's preparation later on didn't take as many assumptions with what other people might understand.

As she gets into the meat of it she introduces some points with the understanding of how runners operate and closing in the gaps with her understanding of sysops. Understanding herself as qualified specialist in this field her notations are far more liberal throughout to help guide Elizabeth guide her audience through the constructed points.

A small shake, she comes back to focus on the space in front of her to see Elizabeth there with a hand on her shoulder. A nod, her eyes flash briefly once more and the information is sent to Elizabeth's device. Briefly interacting before the woman walks off and into the light of the stage. Leaving Nadia where she was in the peace and quiet outside of the limelight. As Elizabeth's part began, Nadia's eyes light up once more and left to her own devices she spends some time searching through the net to whatever curiosity takes her.

Day 2 Agenda Event, Seminar Talks, roll 1 the introduction, charm at average difficulty, 1 strain for added success from geno sculpted physique: 2eP+1eA+2eD 1 success, 1 Triumph
ImageImageImageImageImage

"Hey new Angeles, how are you doing?"
Jane strides out onto the stage wearing a pair of gleaming hologlasses
Webp.net-resizeimage.jpg
Webp.net-resizeimage.jpg (32.71 KiB) Viewed 770 times
"Now, I'm sure you're all just thrilled to be here with me and Optical Fundamentals right between that last seminar with the teleporting octopus and the guy after me with the three monkeys that prove Fermat's last theorem. I mean, we're just an eye-ware company, what can make our presentation so exciting?"

The stage fades into blackness, lit only by the dull blue light of her glasses.
"Well, we're going to put on a little demonstration today. You see, our new line. The Eye7...don't tell Apple. The Eye7 can on the fly adjust to give you full spectrum coverage of night vision, thermal, UV and radiowaves. So if for some reason you need to dodge some lasers.."
Several rotating lines of lasers glow on the stage and Jane effortlessly tumbles through them.

Day 2 Agenda Event, Seminar Talks, roll 2, the idea. Coordination at average, 1 strain for enhanced muscles to add a success to the roll: 1eP+4eA+2eD 2 successes, 2 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

"Then not only will it be easy, but with Optical Fundamentals, you'll look good doing it. And, 2nd amendment folk out there. We've got a little something for you too. Our patented 'stand your ground first' technology provides seamless on the fly audio, visual and kinetic feedback of your ballistic. Crucial in any firefight, or if you're just down on the range. Observe!"

Jane whips out a small pistol and makes a series of trickshots, at the end bouncing the projectile three times to hit a target behind a wall.

Day 2 Agenda Event, Seminar Talks, roll 3, the conclusion. Ranged light, average dificulty with one upgrade. Boost from previous roll, 1 strain for extra success from enhanced muscles: 1eP+4eA+1eB+1eC+1eD 4 successes, 1 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

"And we do it all with a 60 day money back guarantee and, ethically sourced parts and components. Remember, just because it's out of sight doesn't mean it should be out of mind."

She finishes with a bow and a wink before exiting stage left.

Roger 3, +1 Funding Point (1 total)
Lina (NAG Mk3-19) 1, (1 total)
Lenore Gauvreau 2
Evangeline Lux 2
Ven Garcia-Estravez 3, +1 Funding Point (1 total)
Diana Harper 2
Leo Knight 3, +1 Funding Point (2 total)
Nadia Avaline 3, +1 Funding Point (1 total)
Jane Doe 3, +1 Funding Point (2 total)

Total Committee Score 22/12

The first night of the New Angeles Expo was a proven success, especially thanks to the members of the committee who all gave great presentations. The audience found themselves rather surprised by the diversity found with each member, some even surprising them with flair in their seminar that went above the conventional seminar talk. All of them have been recorded and distributed on the Network.

+1 Agenda Point!
